While bright screens are a great way to easily read text, they also torment your eyes if you use your Mac at night. Turning the brightness down might be helpful, although sometimes, even the least brightest can be taxing on your eyes.
Luckily, Apple offers its users another option to make their screens darker — the dark mode. Here’s how to turn on dark mode on a Mac.
Steps To Make Mac Dark Mode
Dark Mode is a strikingly new appearance that makes it easier for you to concentrate on your task. Dark Mode uses a dark color scheme that is compatible with the whole operating system, including the applications that come pre-installed on your Mac. Additionally, it is open to adoption by third-party applications.
Here’s how you can turn on Dark Mode in your MacBook or iMac:
- Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
- Click on “General,” the first option located right below your Apple ID details.
- Here, you’ll see a section named “Appearance,” with three appearance options: Light, Dar, and Auto. The Auto mode will automatically turn your Mac into dark mode after sunset and light mode at sunrise.
- Sleect dark mode.
- That’s it! Your Mac will now convert to dark mode until you convert it back to light.
Dark mode changes the colors and backgrounds of the display, menu bar, and all of the Apple apps, like Safari, Mail, Calculator, Notebook, the Mac App Store, Messaging, and much more.
How Can You Enable Dark Mode On An Older Version Of MacOS?
The steps mentioned above may not work in older versions of macOS. For example, the Control Center option is only available in macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur, which were among the first to have one.
In some previous macOS versions (macOS High Sierra and before), dark mode only affects the system navigation menu and Dock and has no effect on other user interface components or applications. Only macOS Catalina and later include an automatic Dark Mode option that activates and deactivates at sunset and sunrise.
To activate Mac night mode in previous macOS editions, follow these instructions:
macOS High Sierra to OS X Yosemite
- Open the System Preferences program.
- Select the General option.
- Check the box to the right of it. Use a dark menu bar and dock it.
macOS Mojave
- Open the System Preferences program.
- Select the General option.
- From the Appearance drop-down menu, choose Dark.
